Maria & The Happiness Experiment: 2013 – Always

Oct 23, 2014 by

1.1          On Pont des Arts in Paris hangs thousands of locks. Typically, they are attached to the bridge as romantic gestures. Couples write their names on the locks, seal them to the bridge, and throw the keys into the Seine to symbolize unending devotion. This practice of locking love to Pont des Arts began in 2008, and has been led by tourists. Though there is growing controversy over the locks for weakening the bridge, more are added daily. Love-locking has become so popular that there are locks hanging upon locks. Pont des Arts is not the only location in Paris and Paris is not the only city in the world with love locks, but it is where I’m proud to say mine can be found.

A while ago, I read in The Huffington Post about a girl who visited Paris while single, and wrote “Alexandria & Herself” on one of the love lock bridges as a message to love yourself first. I liked the point she was making. I’ve wanted to put a love lock on a Paris love lock bridge for as long as I’ve known about them; but, it is because of what Alexandria did that I promised myself my first lock would be a declaration of love to myself. Yesterday, on Pont des Arts, I made that statement. Like the romantics do, I threw the keys into the Seine after locking my love to the bridge to signify that my love for myself and my happiness experiment are endless.

Full disclosure: I missed the Seine (see pictures below). You know you can’t aim when there’s a huge river and a tiny ledge, and while aiming for the huge river, you hit the tiny ledge. (This is why gym was my worst subject in school.) I laughed, because of how characteristic it is of The Happiness Experiment (and life) that things don’t go as expected. This is exactly why I love it, I thought before finding a branch beneath a nearby tree, retrieving the keys, and tossing them in aim of the river again. This time, they went in.

Happiness Tip: Declare love to yourself.
